Identité

Emma Matteini

FThe image represents Uwase, and it is inspired by an interview conducted with them. The conversation explored the multifaceted nature of identity and how it can clash, making it difficult to experience a full sense of belonging. The fading effect in the image symbolizes these overlapping and sometimes clashing dimensions of their identity, which together shape their persona. This internal dichotomy is deeply influenced by their environment. Born in Rwanda and having lived in Kenya, Uwase is now based in Berlin. Each place brings its own challenges: their sexual orientation and gender identity are a source of discrimination in Rwanda and Kenya, while in Berlin, those aspects are more accepted - but their race becomes a new source of discrimination. Even though they are not completely accepted by everyone in the different countries, they have found safe spaces and supportive communities where they can fully be their own self.
